What is the PBS?
The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) is an Australian Government program that subsidises the cost of prescription medications. Under the PBS, you pay a fixed co-payment — currently $25.00 for general patients or $7.70 for concessional cardholders — regardless of the actual cost of the medicine.
Three ways to save
Generic substitution
Some brand-name drugs carry a "brand premium" on top of the PBS co-payment. Switching to a generic with the same active ingredient can eliminate this extra cost.
60-day prescriptions
Eligible medications can be dispensed as a 60-day supply for a single co-payment — effectively halving your annual script costs for those drugs.
Safety Net threshold
Once your annual PBS spend reaches $1,748.20 (general) or $277.20 (concessional), you pay reduced rates or nothing for the rest of the year.
